“Birth of An Advocate”

Would you like to be a more effective advocate for your child with special needs?"

As parents we all want the same things . . .

-- To be there for all of our children.
-- To make sure our kids are accepted for the unique individuals they are.
-- To make sure each child gets the most effective education possible.
-- To do all we can to support the lifelong success of our children.

But how do you get the knowledge and skills to be that "ultimate parent/advocate"?

Well, you have several options:

Option 1: Trial & Error:

This is the tried and true approach of some parents. You simply figure it out, the best you can, as you go along. Unfortunately there are two major disadvantages to this approach.

#1 - It takes time to get it right. This lost time is valuable learning time in the life of your child that simply can't be re-captured and replayed once you figure things out.

#2 - It guarantees mistakes and failure. No one is perfect and unfortunately the one who will be hurt by the failed approaches and mistakes is the LAST person you would ever want to harm -- your child. Are you willing to risk that?

Option 2: Trust the Experts:

Many parents go this route. They simply trust that the professionals working with their child will have the know-how, committment, and compassion to do what's best -- even when it's difficult, expensive or inconvenient.

In an ideal world this would be a great plan. . . . but in the real world of budget crunches, staff shortages, and inadequate training it's often a recipe for disaster. So ask yourself: Which world do you live in?

Option 3: Empower Yourself:

This option requires more work on your part, but it also solves many of the problems of the first two approaches.

-- A knowledgable parent will make fewer mistakes and be well-prepared to protect the child they love.

-- An empowered advocate will be able to draw on the expertise of others without relinguishing their right to guide and participate in the process.

Birth of an Advocate is a series of interactive workbooks that can help you become both Knowledgable and Empowered.

Birth of an Advocate is unique in that:

  • It's self paced. You can absorb facts and apply new skills at a pace that is comfortable for you.
  • It's parent-friendly. Each workbook breaks information down into "bite size" chunks that are easy to process and absorb -- even in the midst of your busy schedule.
  • It's practical. The tips, resources, and ideas included are all focused on "real life" practicality. Theory is nice, but results are nicer!
  • It takes a "hands on" approach. Every segment includes a "hands on" exercise to help you apply what you're learning about to your personal situation.
  • It's crammed with solid resources. Each workbook is filled with hundreds of resources that you can turn to again and again whenever you need to brush up on a particular topic.

Birth of an Advocate is truly a one-stop training series for parent advocates.

"I found you during a desperate, frantic, last-minute search for information on inclusion to take to my daughter's IEP. Not only was I able to access info that helped me advocate for Charlotte the very next day, but I found a new friend...one I didn't know I was looking for! Plus lots of information on things that I didn't know I didn't know but sure wanted to!! ...
Thank you and keep up the good work!"
    ~ Kerry Hincka, parent

Workbook 2: Survival Skills for the Family

Conquering the day-to-day chaos of life with kids can be tough. Figuring out how to add a special needs child into this mix can be mind-boggling. Are you struggling to connect with a child who can't talk? Do you spend every vacation and holiday at home because you're scared to travel with your medically fragile child? Are you tired of throwing birthday parties where none of the invited guests show up? Real life can be a struggle and families not dealing with a special needs child can sometimes be thoughtless and cruel. I'd like to help you through some of the everyday dilemmas. Can I cover them all? No. Can I help with some of the more frustrating ones? You bet!

In this volume we'll talk about:

    • How to communicate with a child who doesn't use words
    • How to find toys that will encourage learning
    • How to include your child with special needs in the fun stuff (holidays, vacations, and birthday parties)
    • How to find support and help for your family through Early Intervention

    Workbook 3: Surviving Special Education

It's time for your little one to start school. You know he's going to need some extra help. People keep talking about special education, IEPs, advocacy, assistive technology, alternative assessment, eligibility determinations . . . What language is this?!

Do you feel like you need an interpreter? Special Education is a whole new world and it will take time to learn the ropes, but I can make your learning curve quicker and easier.

In this volume we'll talk about:

    • How to learn the basics of special education law
    • What it takes to be an "advocate"
    • How they decide if your child is eligible
    • What an IEP is and how to get an effective one
    • How to deal with disagreements
    • What assistive technology is and how to use it to help your child
    • How to help classmates understand and accept your child

Workbook 4: Surviving the Challenges of Adulthood

I know, I know, you thought helping your kids to graduation was the final goal. Unfortunately, adulthood brings a whole new set of challenges to the child with special needs. Now you have to worry about where they will live, how they will support themselves, how to keep them safe from harm, and even who will look after them when you're gone. These aren't easy topics, and most of us would prefer to just ignore them. Please don't. Finding the right solutions requires patience, creativity, and TIME. If you wait until graduation day -- it will be too late!

In this volume, I'll help you think through:

    • How to find the right job
    • What housing options are available
    • How to develop a support network around your child
    • How to help them plan a lifestyle that is both safe and satisfying
    • Ways they can become more included in their community of choice
    • And even -- how to help them build adult relationships
